On 3-4 October 2025 in London (UK), the LMU Biological Security Research Centre (BRSC) held a highly successful workshop titled “The Impact of Emerging and Converging Technologies on Biosecurity and its Education” as the first of two workshops aiming to understand how biosecurity education can best keep pace with potential risks from advances in the life sciences.
The hybrid workshop featured presentations under Chatham House rules from nine experts from a range of academic and industry institutions worldwide including the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Rudgers University, the University of Sussex and the J. Craig Venter Institute – as well as from BSRC staff, Prof. Lijun Shang and Prof. Malcolm Dando.
The Workshop explored a wide array of topics—ranging from the biosecurity implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-driven vaccine development to mirror biology, advances in neuroscience, and beyond—while considering how to effectively incorporate these potential risks into comprehensive, forward-looking biosecurity education for life scientists.
